One of the issues that have been adressed in reviews was modesty. Before seeing this film you have to realize it is a movie about surfing that took place in Hawaii, meaning of course modesty was not an issue to them. I have shared in a few discussions about people just "not knowing better" about modesty. I have come to the undecided conclusion on that. Many will point to someone in a bakini and say "how can they call themselves a Christian?" To be honest I find that judgemental. While in most cases their observation might be correct, they must realize the bakini isn't the only evidence of their hypocrisy. In some very rare cases I think some people honestly don't know any better about the issue of modesty, and I do think this would be one of those very rare cases. Being raised in hawaii, it is more than a trend-it is a culture. I'm not saying that it excuses anything, only that they may not know any better. Scripture clearly tells us "judge not that you be judged". Instead of judging them, why not try praying that God would bring this issue to their attention? I'd be willing to bet it would be far more effective!
Another issue that was addressed in a few reviews was the night that she snuk out to go night surfing. The issue was not entirely excused the morning after when she spoke with her mother. She appeared to be apologetic saying she would ask before she went again. In which case her mother said that she would hold her to it. I do think this is an issue, but these two things in themselves don't seem like enough to completely boycot the film. Yes they are issues, and I am not saying they should be excused. In my opinion the film had enough redeeming qualities that are definitely worth our time to watch.
"Soul Surfer" was an incredibly moving film. The true story of Bethany Hamilton is one to be remembered. "For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstance"~Phillipians. In the film "soul surfer" a few details in the story were altered for dramatic affect. One detail being her in the hospital. After watching an interview I soon learned that she was not participating in any form of a pity party as was portrayed in the film. A video showed the real Bethany Hamilton after her shark attack playing joyfully with balloons in the hospital! The film showed her wallowing in despair. You would think after loosing your arm in a shark attack that you would at least take the time in the hospital to enjoy a little self pitty! Bethany made a decision to be joyful, and that decision has gotten her to where she is today: a professional surfer glorifying God through her circumstance, sharing her faith with countless souls through her incredible story.
So what is it that makes the story of Bethany Hamilton so incredible? Was it the amazing fact that she became a professional surfer with just one arm? Or was it her outlook and positive attitude so great that it had the power to shock and touch us all? Personally I think its a combination of both; and that we all have the ability to relate to details in her story in our own individual ways.
Another thing I find admirable about Bethany Hamilton is that she promotes inner beauty. In the film you will see a scene where she throws down the fake arm in frusturation knowing it will not work for her lifestyle, but in real life it went a bit differently. She wore the arm for a little while, but then came to realize it didn't work for her lifestyle AND she didn't need a fake arm to look beautiful. From the image above you can see the truth in that, and by watching some interviews you will see her love for the Lord which gives her such a radiant glow. Bethany Hamilton is an extrodinary individual. Even if you don't get a chance to see the film, research her story.
"I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" was a verse that she repeated in the film. Her story is living proof that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!
As far as the film making goes... I found the cast to be completely brilliant! AnnaSophia Robb did an excellent job with the lead part. I was so delighted to see her have the part of Bethany Hamilton, seeing the fact that I just love her as an actress. The entire cast was delightful, the filming was very well done, the story as I mentioned was incredible making for an all around fabulous film.
The film teaches us many lessons: contentment, compassion, joy, perserverance, and so much more. Not only are we to walk away with these principles, but we are commanded to put them into practice.
When the credits roll I hope you feel delighted and satisfied just as I did. And I hope you come straight back here and tell me what you thought of it!
